The Department of Management in the Strome College of Business at Old Dominion University invites applications from qualified candidates for tenure-track positions starting in August, 2020. While the position and needs are at the Assistant Professor level, qualified candidates with exceptional credentials may be considered for a more senior level position (Associate/Full Professor/Chaired-professorship).
Responsibilities include high quality research that is publishable in top-tier journals, teaching management courses (such as Strategic Management and/or Entrepreneurship) at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as service to the university, the broader community, and profession. Senior scholars would be expected to play a leadership role in growing the entrepreneurship program at ODU.
Old Dominion University
ODU is a dynamic metropolitan, residential, and research-extensive public institution with a student enrollment of more than 25,000, including approximately 6,000 graduate students, and nearly 1,500 international students. Home to the world’s largest natural deep water port and third busiest port on the East Coast, the Atlantic headquarters of NATO, and Naval Station Norfolk, which houses the U.S. Navy and U.S. Fleet Forces Command, Norfolk was recently named a ‘Best City for Entrepreneurship’ by Entrepreneur Magazine. The Hampton Roads region as a whole is experiencing a surge in entrepreneurial activity through collaborative initiatives between the university and local businesses and government agencies.
Strome College of Business
The College was named in June 2014 as part of the Strome Family Foundation’s major gift to establish a multi-pronged approach to nurturing entrepreneurship throughout the university. AACSB-accredited in both business and accounting, the College offers a wide range of undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs including business analytics, economics, information systems and technology, international business, public administration and urban policy, and supply chain management. The 105 full-time College faculty serve almost 2,000 undergraduate and 240 graduate students, including over 100 doctoral students. The College offers its MBA and undergraduate programs on campus and online. The areas of strategic focus for the college include Entrepreneurship, International Business, Port and Maritime Management, and Multi-sector Partnerships.

The Department is actively involved in instruction at the undergraduate level as well as the graduate level (MBA program and doctoral program). Minimum required qualifications for the position include: (1) an earned doctorate degree (by August 2020) in Management from an AACSB/EQUIS accredited institution with an emphasis in Strategic Management or Entrepreneurship, (2) evidence of a strong research agenda (such as publications in high quality/top-tier peer-reviewed journals and peer-reviewed presentations at national and international conferences), and (3) evidence of effective teaching of management courses.
To be considered at the senior professor level, candidates should have a significant record of accomplishment of publications in top-tier publications and evidence of service to the profession, department, college and university.
To complement department capabilities, we prefer candidates who have expertise/interest in any one of the following areas:
Entrepreneurship: We are interested in candidates with research interests in entrepreneurship among economically distressed communities/women/ Veterans/ immigrants.
Business Consulting: We prefer candidates who have experience in and have experience with teaching courses in consulting.
Business Engagement: Strome College and ODU have recently launched several local initiatives to not only promote entrepreneurship education and research, but also create a supportive eco-system for start-ups in the region. The Management department plays a critical role in supporting these initiatives. Thus, we welcome applications from candidates who are ready to assume a leadership role in supporting these initiatives and engage with the local business community.
