Postdoctoral Researcher - Whitman School of Management
This newly created Postdoctoral Researcher position will help combine two areas of excellence at Syracuse University: scholarship in the areas of Entrepreneurship and veteran and military families. This is a one-year fully-funded position, with the opportunity for an additional one year renewal. The Postdoctoral Researcher will serve in a dual-role, based within the Department of Entrepreneurship & Emerging Enterprises (EEE) at the Whitman School of Management and as a member of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) Research and Analytics team. At Whitman, the Postdoctoral Researcher will contribute to the EEE Department’s scholarly output and teach one course. Within IVMF, the Postdoctoral Researcher will play a leading scientific role in the launch and day-to-day management of the National Survey on Military-Connected Entrepreneurs initiative, a multi-year study of military-connected (veteran and military spouse) entrepreneurs. This initiative is designed to address critical gaps in understanding of veteran and military spouse entrepreneurs and the supporting mechanisms needed to assist throughout their entrepreneurial journey. This survey will be distributed (both yearly and over time) to aspiring, current, and former business owners in the veteran and military spouse communities. Key aspects include: a broad focus on the military-connected entrepreneur community (i.e., transitioning service members, veterans, guard/reservist, and military spouses); annual, consistent, and in-depth insight into the various barriers, concerns, and progress within military-connected business owner community; insights on business performance, surrounding ecosystems of support, and military service background; annual cross-sectional and longitudinal (year-over-year) data collection; a publicly available dataset on military-connected entrepreneurship for general use and subsequent research. The Postdoctoral Researcher will contribute to the IVMF’s mission by working primarily in the National Survey on Military-Connected Entrepreneurs and translating knowledge that informs the Institute as well as national practitioners and stakeholders who serve the veteran and military connected community. This position will work closely with the Director of Applied Research at the IVMF and EEE faculty. The Postdoctoral Researcher will report to the Alex McKelvie (Professor of Entrepreneurship at Whitman), with additional supervision and mentorship provided by Nick Armstrong (IVMF Senior Director of Research and Analytics).
